Introduction

Department of Food Safety and Quality Assurance was established in 2008 with the objective of training students in the field of Food Technology. The department is mainly comprised of two basic laboratories i.e., Food Microbiology and Food Chemistry. The department is involved in provide training and guidance to the under graduate students in quality and safety aspects of food products. The department offers training to the students through regular practical classes as per the guideline and recommendations of FSSAI standards, India.

Further, to cater to the needs of quality and trained manpower with necessary professional skills in food industry as well as health sector and to educate work force in the field of food technology. Since its inception, the Department took rapid strides in teaching and research in the area establishing itself as a premier Department in field of food technology.

The Food Chemistry lab is a well-lit and ventilated spacious one with a floor space of 1800 sq. ft. (60 X 30 ft). The Lab also supports ELPM product analysis in terms energy and proximate composition and nutritional profile, etc., and most of the time it is occupied as the practical is conducted in two batches for better attention and supervision by the teachers. Food Chemistry laboratory is well furnished with advanced instruments and equipment like kjeldahl apparatus (Pelican), UV-Vis double beam spectrophotometer, Soxhlet apparatus (Pelican), digital photofluorometer etc.

The Food Microbiology lab is a well-lit and ventilated spacious one with a floor space of 1800 sq .ft. (60 X 30 ft). The lab is facilitated with enough work benches for the comfortable learning by students. The Lab also supports ELPM product analysis in terms quality and safety. Food Microbiology Laboratoty also furnished with fully automated Autoclave (Equitron), double beam UV-vis spectrophotometer (Thermofisher), Bag mixer (Interscience, France), Refrigerated centrifuge (Eppendorf), BOD Incubator, Orbitol Shaking Incubator, Freezer (-20°C), Laminar Air Flow chamber, Fluorescent trinocular microscope (make LABOMED & Model: LX 400 FLR) etc.

The department of FSQA offers courses like General Microbiology, Food Microbiology, Food Biochemistry and Nutrition, Industrial Microbiology, Food Chemistry of Macronutrients, Food Chemistry of Micronutrients, Food Biotechnology, Instrumental Techniques in Food Analysis, Food Plant Sanitation, Food Quality, Safety Standards and Certification.

Students can opt for higher education in the field of food safety and quality assurance in India or Abroad. The department teaching faculty also offers special coaching classes to the needy students related to ICAR-JRF, GATE (for both XE and XL), IIFPT, CFTRI etc.
